The Shift

What Is “AI Search”?

Traditional search returns a list of links. AI search returns an answer — a single response the tool writes by pulling from multiple sources. Instead of ten blue links, users get a summary that may mention or cite a handful of brands. The goal shifts from ranking a link to being part of the answer.

If you want help improving how your business is discovered, understood and referenced in these results, see our AI SEO services.

The Three Acronyms

AEO, GEO & AIO
What Each One Means

AEO

Answer Engine Optimization

Structuring content so an engine can lift it as the direct answer — featured snippets, voice results and AI answer boxes. The aim is to be the answer, not just a link near it.

Think: “Be the answer.”

GEO

Generative Engine Optimization

Earning citations and mentions when generative tools (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, AI Overviews) synthesise an answer from many sources. It’s driven by authority and reputation across the web, not one page.

Think: “Be cited.”

AIO

AI Optimization

The broad, ongoing work of making AI systems understand, trust and recommend your business. Some use “AIO” specifically for optimising toward Google’s AI Overviews.

Think: “Be understood & trusted.”

An honest note on the jargon: these terms are new and overlap heavily. Many people use AEO and GEO interchangeably, and there’s no settled industry standard yet. The label matters far less than the work — and all of it builds on solid SEO, it doesn’t replace it. Clear, well-structured, well-sourced, genuinely authoritative content is what both people and machines reward. And no one can honestly guarantee placement in AI answers — be cautious of anyone who says they can.

Frequently Asked Questions

AI Search

No. SEO is the foundation AI search builds on — engines still need to find, understand and trust your content. AEO, GEO and AIO add to good SEO; they don’t replace it. Our AI SEO service is built around strengthening those foundations for both traditional and AI-powered search.

No, and be wary of anyone who claims they can. AI answers are highly variable and no one controls them. We focus on the signals that make you more likely to be found, cited and recommended.

Usually not. Clear, well-structured, authoritative content tends to perform across traditional search and AI surfaces at once. It’s one content program, not three.

It’s an emerging area. We track traditional rankings and traffic alongside signs of AI visibility, and are honest that measurement here is still developing across the industry.
